Amazon releasing all new Fire HD 8 Kids edition tablet

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids editionWe’ve been using our Fire Kids Edition Tablet pretty heavily the past three years. The old tablet routinely fills up the internal storage and then I have to get into a fight with the OS to delete some old games. The new edition is out, we’re getting it, here’s a comparison with our Fire Kids 7 to the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition

Fire Kids Edition 7″ (old)

  • 1024×7600
  • 8.6″ x 5.4″ x 1.0″ (219 x 138 x 25.5 mm)
  • Quad Core 1.3GHz with 1GB RAM
  • 8GB / 4.56GB actually available or 16 GB / 11.6GB depending on edition
  • 7 hour battery life
  • 6-hour charge via Micro USB 2.0

Fire HD 8 Kids Edition (new hotness)

  • 1280×800
  • 9.6″ x 6.1″ x 1.0″ (244 mm x 155 mm x 26 mm)
  • Quad-core 1.3 GHz with 1.5 GB of RAM
  • 32GB / 27 probably available
  • 10 hour battery
  • Under 6 hour charge via Micro USB 2.0

So what all is there different?

Not a whole heck of a lot. The added memory will help performance, the quad 1.3GHz processors are probably about the same speed (different processors at same GHz speeds can perform differently, and it’s been about three years, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt,) I’m betting the internal storage is going to be a little quicker than the 8GB version though.

You’re not so much paying for the tablet as you are pre-paying for a year of Freetime, which is about $36USD per child.

Is it worth it?

You’re paying for Freetime, and all the content you can play without being bugged for in app purchases. The tablet is acceptable. The parental controls are ok. The previous model has survived my two kids pretty well and other than that the battery is starting to get a little weak I’ve got no huge complaints about it.

If you want to get a better tablet and a case and not go the Freetime route, hat’s off to you. You can get something about twice the speed and do it yourself for the same price and probably add freetime in after the fact.

You can preorder one here, or purchase them after October 4th, 2018
