Robbery, shootings, and attempting to reach kid’s daycare

Nuclear OptionYesterday my car got robbed. This has put me on a bit of edge as basically a guy saw a dome light in one car (on because kids,) and then tried the handle on mine which was unlocked (potentially due to three year old jumping on me, or perhaps just missed locking it in the rain hauling kiddo in.

Today we saw there were shots fired on the district page our littlest is currently in daycare in. While I didn’t suspect the worst as the news was kind of old I decided to call the daycare anyway and just see if they had heard anything. I got no answer.

Not entirely uncommon, there’s not someone at the phones all the time. No answer a little later. Worry starting to well up but no new news on the district page other than police were out looking. Called again while I was at the bank running a deposit for work. Nothing.

As I was about to get on the interstate heading toward the daycare as paranoia had crept in I reached someone and asked if they had had to do anything about it. She said they’d put the school on lockdown and I said you might want to wait as that news was now about two hours old.

Got me thinking though that something to verify with your daycare is how to reach someone when there’s nobody at the desks. How is the school/daycare going to get the call from the police, neighbors, whatever that they need to be on lockdown?

While I wasn’t in panic mode I was about to add 10 or so miles hauling my butt down there to get in.

They had evidently recruited the person who answers the phones to take over in sleeping baby room while people wandered out to grab lunch or attend to other things (I don’t know, I wasn’t looking for excuses at that point).

Something I’m going to ask when I go in – how are you going to get notified when some idiot starts shooting two blocks away next time? Five shots fired a maximum of 1200 feet away from my kid, police presense, should somehow trigger a daycare lockdown and it didn’t happen.
