New beds night 2, and 1

Maggie in the bassinet
This is not Maggie’s new bed, however for about five minutes yesterday she decided it was

I moved Maggie’s old crib out of the nursery to take it upstairs. The original plan back when plans were made was to keep the nursery for the smallest, but evicting Maggie into the room we built for her has been a lot more time consuming than previously anticipated.

So we decided to turn a nook of the upstairs that really wasn’t in use into a temporary nursery, or at least a place to slap the crib and let little squish sleep.

Last night was a lot of wakeups. I’m told Maggie fell out of bed two or three times and each time ITMama had to go, pick her back up, put her in bed and calm her down. Now, falling out of bed here means a drop of five inches onto a pillow, so this was mostly just her waking up and not being able to figure out what was going on.

Little squish fought going to bed valiantly for about eight minutes then passed out. I woke up a couple of times and checked on her as it’s new and I wanted to make sure there wasn’t going to be some gotcha to having her there that we hadn’t thought of. There wasn’t.

About 4:30am I look up and see Maggie sitting in the middle of the room playing with her nighttime dollies. Sleep brain doesn’t think much of this and I close my eyes for a few minutes until Kim tells me it’s my turn to do something with her.

I hadn’t really been sleeping, so this wasn’t much of a problem. I went downstairs, heard Maggie saying “help me?” in a very odd way, walked in and she’s the Little Mermaid.

She’d decided in the night that she wanted to wear big girl underwear. She took off her diaper, threw it into the dirty clothes pile, grabbed some underwear (I’m assuming from the dirty clothes pile, but I don’t know,) got them on, and only at this point did her plan fail. She got both of her legs in the same hole and pulled as hard as she could thinking this was how you did it and managed to hog tie herself.

It actually took some working to get her out of the tie. After that I slapped her on the potty as I had no idea how long she’d been since taking the diaper off. I did a quick cursory check of the areas she had access to just to make sure there weren’t any new brown friends on the floor, but no, it didn’t appear to be.

I checked back in a couple of minutes and asked if she was wanting to be awake for the day and she said no. This was good as it was about 5am and I don’t like that hour. She went back to bed and I asked if she was going to be able to get to sleep. She said “I don’t think so daddy.” and I could see she was pretty much awake, but not entirely.

I ended up loading her up with some entertainment options, which lasted her about thirty minutes before she came and asked for me at the gate. I asked her whether she wanted up yet, and she said no but she wanted to play with something else. OK.

Aerin in the crib
Maggie’s old crib and a baby in mid swaddling as it’s 20 degrees outside and we had no idea what the temp was going to be

I laid down for a while longer, didn’t really sleep as I was a little concerned about being unconscious in a house with a toddler awake. It’s like you know they’re not going to but you can fully imagine them picking up a knife and seeing if poking it into someone really does make the red come out. Or finding some weird 1940’s-house secret that we don’t know about and falling into a coal pit or something.

Unreasonable fears, but things that ran through my mind.

She played by herself until about seven when we go up and started the day.

Baby was asleep, not terribly deeply though, and woke after having slept about ten hours in a row (which is both awesome and somewhat scary sometimes).
