Hello world!

EarthIt’s an interesting day. Today’s about the first day in a week I’ve had any sort of cognitive abilities due to Monday’s sickness and the resultant inability to keep foods in me. Evidently it takes food to power any sort of cognition.

I woke up today in a stupor, I didn’t really have any sort of goal this morning other than to get Maggie to school before she missed breakfast there. I’d really managed to miss the events of the past four days. I just found out.

We now live in a world where I’m not going to have to explain to my daughters that everyone is equal, but we’ll deny some of them government-protected rights based on who they choose to love and call family.

How will I explain homosexuality to my childWhile the general argument I’ve heard among parents is “how will I explain homosexuality to my children?” my fear has always been “how will I explain that we’re living in a society that comes up with reasons to discriminate against based on reasons that either no longer or never applied”.

Gays can get married, great! Now maybe fewer will fear coming out, and fewer will live closeted, afraid of what the repercussions are that come from admitting you are who you are.

Basically my stance has always been if marriage is a religious institution then keep the government the hell out of it. If it’s an institution to protect and help parents and their children, then those that don’t have kids kick them out of it. If it’s for two people who love each other and want to financially care for their partner and any family that they might create, open it to anyone who wants it. Why deny or attempt to legislate someone’s religious morality over someone elses?

But now I don’t have to once again look at the world and divide it up into them and us and try and justify why us is good when we’re enjoying what them cant. If that makes any sense.

That’s a good thing.

For the people completely against it, well, you’re no longer going to see protests for marriage equality, or have to hear about the issue on the news, because it’s done. You’ll be able to sit down, read your paper, and not have to muddle through page after page of various reporting on teh gayz wantin their rights because finally the country isn’t denying them.

Hello new world.

Now let’s work on that them and us thing shall we?
