Baby vs baby pool

Maggie at the baby poolMaggie had her first and second baby pool experiences recently, the results are that she’s a water baby and regardless of how warm the water is and the surrounding air temperature is, she somehow manages to become colder than the surroundings.

I thought at first I had misjudged the situation, but nope, her surface temp goes down below either the water or air temp. I’m guessing there’s some evaporative elements of thermodynamics I’m not quite factoring in, but the end result is a cold baby on a hot day in warm water.

Each day we let her play in the pool it ended up a very tired and very hungry baby, so I’m thinking that if you’re looking for a way to get your baby exhausted, eating more, etc, a baby pool may be the way to go if you’ve got the space.

What I didn’t factor in is that the baby pool becomes an instant baby magnet. It doesn’t matter where I am working in the yard, Maggie will start her scootch crawling over to wherever the pool is sitting at that point.

It has encouraged a lot of baby activity and squeals of joy.

I’ve got it set up so I can work on the plants in the front yard without having to move more than a step away, and usually that just involves grabbing a hose with a sprayer and spraying it on the plants, and occasionally watering the baby to squeals.

For a pool that was purchased as a party accessory in 2006, this thing has held up remarkably well. I’ve had to pressure wash it a couple of times, but whatever.

Yesterday we ended the pool time by sudzing her up and getting her hair cleaned out. It was about the happiest bath she’d ever had. I’m sure there will be some resultant teenage trauma when I inform her that she got a bath out in the front yard, but whatever.

One thing I have had to watch out for is that a fully clothed baby will get remarkably soaked if given half a second at a baby pool side. I don’t know how they manage to transfer such amounts of water from the pool to their clothes and diaper, but I think science should take note.

I’m sure it has something to do with why she’s colder than the surroundings.
