It started sometime around two PM today when an otherwise happy baby while eating and being perfectly normal in a public place started screaming her lungs out like we were torturing her, and it didn’t much stop until nearly six when I managed to get her to sleep and force some Infamil Gentlease down her throat.
I’d tried switching her off of the soy formula she’d been on for the past few days earlier in the day, but hysterical baby was having none of the eating and being normal. It was the same shrieking and refusing to be consoled that the baby night terror post was about, but it was awake and not coming out of sleep.
After accessing the sleeping baby feeding routine she woke up looking quite confused that I’d managed to feed her in her sleep, she also looked extremely tired but happy, a sort of stoned look of acceptance that things must happen.
During all of this I broke out my stethoscope that I’ve had since I was a little kid and listened to her breath, her heart, her stomach gurgling. I did note a marked dropoff in stomach burglegrable after switching away from soy, and she seems to have been fine for the past seven hours, but this is a sort of wait and see thing.
We also are attempting a different diaper for nighttime on the theory that she may be waking herself up when she urinates and not getting restful sleep since she’s pretty much the most moving sleeping baby I’ve ever seen.
It’s 1:34am now, I’ve checked on her four times in the past three hours as she’s not moving. Each time I go down, verify that she’s ok, get some response from a bottle or a pacifier, check her temperature, and head back up.
So, not sure if the change in food and diaper have done anything positive or the several hours of hysterical crying baby wore her out, but the end result seems to be she’s actually reasonably resting in her crib and blissfully asleep.
A baby’s screams seem to wear my soul thin.
